Although China's economy has developed very well, China is a country with a vast territory and a large population. Therefore, there are still some families living in poverty. This is especially true in the mountain villages of the Guilin/Yangshuo areas of Guangxi Province. Many farm families still live a meager life on only a bit of land. They struggle to send their children to the local elementary schools even as the Chinese Government provides nine years of free compulsory primary and middle school education. In these rural schools, the allocation of English teachers is even more inadequate.

The V.E.T. Program is dedicated to placing volunteer English teachers in these poorer rural schools to give underprivileged children a distinct advantage in learning the English language, in particular oral English. This program helps to introduce the children to foreign cultures and visitors so that they may learn to feel comfortable among people from all over the world.

The "V.E.T. Program" has existed for more than 15 years. Thousands of Chinese and foreign volunteers have participated in the program. Most of them are foreign volunteers. They have provided a lot of help to the students in the rural areas of southern China. While teaching in this program you will also have the option to help with small monetary donations to these poorer children and their families. Donations are not compulsory.

The benefits from V.E.T program to the children are numerous and invaluable. Besides being able to pass English tests, which allows them to continue with their education, they will have also acquired the ability to speak (even) a little English and feel comfortable around foreigners, which will help considerably when they are looking for a job in the future, especially in tourist rich Yangshuo and the surrounding regions. Even a few hours a week practicing basic/oral English and reinforcing what their Chinese English teachers have taught them will help tremendously.
